The Jailhouse Lawyer's Handbook

The Jailhouse Lawyer's Handbook is a resource for incarcerated individuals, providing information about their legal rights, procedures, and how to navigate the legal system while in prison. It helps inmates understand their rights, learn how to file lawsuits, and address issues related to their treatment or conditions of confinement.

All inmates can request a free copy to be sent to them. Request a copy at jailhouselaw.com or contact them at:

The American Civil Liberties Union of Kansas is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting the civil rights and liberties of all people living in Kansas. We work in the state legislature, the courts, and local communities to ensure that those who threaten the civil liberties of Kansans are met with stark resistance. We work for policy change to expand and strengthen civil liberties, provide legal counsel, and act as an ally and an advocate for people who are denied the rights guaranteed to them by the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights.

It is our mission to protect and defend the constitutional rights and civil liberties of every individual in Kansas regardless of creed, race, religion, gender identification, or class. Our efforts are focused on serving and defending reproductive rights, racial justice, LGBTQ+ rights, First Amendment rights, immigrant rights, voting rights, criminal justice reform, and privacy rights.

The ACLU of Kansas protects the civil rights of segments of our population that have traditionally been marginalized, including women, people of color, lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender and queer, people, currently and formerly incarcerated people, people with disabilities, immigrants, and the poor. We defend the freedoms of all residents of Kansas without consideration of political partisanship.

Project for Innocence and Post-Conviction Remedies

Paul E. Wilson Project for Innocence & Post-Conviction Remedies

The Defender Project was founded at KU Law in 1965 by former Professor Paul E. Wilson to help prisoners who otherwise might not receive legal representation. In 2008, the Project was renamed in Wilson’s honor. The project’s representation extends to both district and appellate court litigation at the state and federal level.

Students in the clinic represent state and federal prisoners in appellate and post-conviction litigation in state and federal courts, including:

  • Conducting fact investigations

  • Locating and working with expert witnesses

  • Creating case strategy

  • Drafting pleadings

  • Filing motions

  • Preparing appellate briefs

  • Participating in district court hearings and appellate arguments

Since 2008, students in the Project have won more than 70 direct appeals, constitutional challenges and actual innocence cases. Students in the Project have helped free three wrongfully convicted Kansans since 2015. The Project gets more than 200 letters a year from inmates seeking assistance.
