Forgotten
by Hernan Quezada
I live in yesterday, because it's better than today. Today is full of despair, tomorrow is without hope. Those that by me are remembered, by them I am forgotten. Those that remembered have forgotten to reach out.
Some days, I wonder would it be better if I forgot to breathe in after I breathe out. I would be free from this box, but place me not into another, set me aflame and scatter me into the wind so I may be forgotten as I am today.
This is Hernan. He is 33 years old and has spent most of his adult life in prison. He is a talented writer and says writing has helped him cope with the dark times in his life. He says “I smile and laugh as much as I can. When life seems to have stopped, laughter can help you forget the hurt.” Hernan has made extraordinary progress in changing his life around, and is currently in school learning construction. He says that since he lives in a world that is prone to violence, it is imperative to not hold grudges because he does not want to ever go back to the person he used to be.
